How Madras got its name?

How Madras got its name?

References at Chennai / Chenna Patnam and Madrasa Pattanam.
22nd of August 1639, a Telugu person named Damarla Venkatappa, a powerful Nayak at that time, permitted the British traders to construct a fort in Madraspatnam. Ayyapa Nayaka, brother of Venkatappa suggested the Britishers to name the new settlement as Chenna Patnam, after his father's name Chennapa Nayaka.

* One opinion is there that the name Madras is originated from 'Manda Rajya', which means Kingdom of Mad people. Probably this roomer was spreaded by the Bengalis who were the commercial competitors of Chennai people.
* One more roomer was there that when the foreigners were walking in the Tamilnadu beach, the Tamilians used to gather around them to see the foreigners in skimpy dresses. Their behaviour annoyed the foreigners. The behaviour of native coolies of Tamilnadu  also one more reason for the irritation of foreigners. They starting calling the place as the place of 'Mad Rascals'. and from this the name Madras originated.

None of the above arguments have the validity of historians.

The city Madras was renamed as Chennai on 17 July 1996.
