Iltutmish 1211 A.D.-1236 A.D.
As
the successor of Aibak, Aram Baksh was an inefficient ruler, Delhi sardars
invited the Badayun governor, and Aibak’s son-in-law, Iltutmish to take the
authority.
Iltutmish used
Arabic language on his coins.
Iltutmish doubled the Quvvat ul Islam mosque.
Revenue and Finance departments were started by Iltutmish.
During the reign of Iltutmish, Alimardhan Khan tried to proclaim independence
in Bengal and Bihar.
Iltutmish was Aibak’s ‘sar-e-jandhar’ in his
early days.
Iltutmish was the first
Delhi sultan to make kingship hereditary.
Iltutmish
introduced silver Tanka and copper
Jittal which were of the weight of 175 grains. Iltutmish has taken titles which
mean ‘Saviour of the lands of God’ and ‘Helper to Allah’s servants’.
In
the year 1221 A.D. Chengiz Khan appeared on the boarders of North West
frontier.
Iltutmish defeated
Aram Baksh at Delhi.
Iltutmish is an
Ilbari Turk. Ilbary tribe.
Iltutmish
started his life as the slave of Qutb ud din Aibak. With his ability he rose to
the position of Sar-e-jandhar of Aibak. Aibak appointed Iltutmish as the
governor of Badayun and gave his daughter in marriage to him.
In
1214 A.D. Iltutmish defeated and killed Tajuddin Yulduz who invaded on India.
In
1217 A.D. Iltutmish retaliated the invasion of the ruler of Multan, Nasiruddin
Qabacha, on Punjab.
In
1225 A.D. Iltutmish suppressed the revolt of Bengal governor Iwaz Khan.
In
1227 A.D. Iltutmish defeated Naseer ud din Qabacha. While fleeing Naseer ud din
Qabacha accidentally fell in the river sindh and died.
Iltutmish defeated
Mangaldev and occupied Gwalior.
Iltutmish defeated
the rulers of Malwa, Bhilsa, Ranathambor, Mand and Ujjain.
Iltutmish destructed Ujjain Mahankali temple.
In
1229 A.D. Iltutmish was recognized
by the caliph as the Sultan of Delhi. Caliph sent him robes of honour. Iltutmish inscribed the name of caliph on his coins. This
recognition is known as ‘Mansur’. During this time Abbasid dynasty was in the
position of caliph.
During the reign of Iltutmish as Delhi Sultan, Bengal ruler Ghiazuddin khilji
was also givern Mansur.
Chingiz
Khan, the ruler of Mangol, established vast empire. Chengiz khan came upto
Sindh chasing Jalal ud
din Mangbarni, ruler of Khwarizm / Khorasam. Iltutmish did
not interfere in their affair. Thus he saved India from Chengiz khan.
Iltutmish
expanded his kingdom up to the river Narmada.
Iltutmish
passed away in
As Iltutmish defeated the ruler of Ghazni, Taj ud din yulduz
and freed India from his authority and got Mansur from caliph, he is considered
as the real founder of Delhi Sultanate.
Iltutmish
installed ‘Bell of Justice’. (Mughal emperor Jahangir also installed Bell of
justice.)
Iltutmish divided
the kingdom into Iqtas. These Iqtas were kept under the authority of military
commanders.
Muqti
is head of Iqta.
Duties
of Muqti – Tax collection, dispensing Justice, gathering army and maintaining
it.
Iltutmish completed the construction of Qutb
Minar which was started by Aibak.
