Arjun, Guru The fifth guru of the Sikhs (1581–1606), he
was the son and
successor
of Guru Ramdas. He compiled the Adi Granth and built the famous
Harmandir
Sahib in the city of Amritsar. In 1577 Akbar had donated the site
to Ramdas
who founded the city there. Guru Arjun required the Sikhs to pay
a
‘spiritual tribute’, a sort of religious cess, thus laying the foundation of
the
wealth of
the Sikh gurus. He was executed by Jahangir for helping prince
Khusrau,
who was in revolt against his father.
