Chandra One of the earliest Indians to get into the
ICS, he
played a
prominent role in the Indianisation of the Civil Services and in
promoting
the cause of nationalism and social reform in India. After retiring
from
service, he actively participated in the Indian national movement and
presided
over the Lucknow Session of the INC in 1899. His Economic
History of
British India (1757–1900) was the first authoritative and
scholarly
exposition
of the economic exploitation of India under British rule.
