Rao, Peshwa The second son of the third Peshwa (Balaji
Baji
Rao) whom
he succeeded at the age of 17 in 1761, he was responsible for the
near
revival of the Maratha power and glory after their rout in the third battle
of Panipat.
He defeated all his neighbours, including the nizam and Haider
Ali. In
north India, he reoccupied Malwa and Bundelkhand, crushed the Jats
and
Rohillas, reoccupied Delhi the fugitive Mughal emperor, Shah Alam II,
who had
long been a prisoner of the English at Allahabad.
