Mir Jumla A Persian merchant-adventurer, he began his career in
Golconda as
a successful dia- mond merchant, entered into the service of
Abdullah
Qutab Shah and became his chief minister. Later he joined the
service of
Shah Jahan with the help of Aurangzeb to whom he presented the
famous
Kohinoor Diamond. During the war of succession, he supported
Aurangzeb
and was rewarded by the latter who appointed his as the governor
of Bengal.
Subsequently he led an expedition against Assam ruled by the
Ahoms,
defeated its ruler and com- pelled him to cede a large part of lower
Assam and
pay a huge indemnity to the Mughals (1662). He passed away in
1663 in his
way back to Dacca.
